CUSTOMS & CUSTOMS REMOVED CANCELLATIONS ON CIP COVERS

'Customs' cancels was only used for a short time by a few towns during the early CIP period.
'Customs' removed cancels was used for a slightly longer period, it's use is only limited to Peking, Tientsin and Foochow.  Foochow 'Customs' removed is the only exception in this group that are used throughout the CIP period.
Below are three examples.

 

  • CUSTOMS SOOCHOW
COVER FROM SOOCHOW TO U.S.A.

2 cents printed matter rate cover used from Soochow to USA canceled by a light blue Customs Soochow cancel of NOV 3, 1898. Shanghai Dollarchop transits to the back of the cover. The 2 sen Japanese stamp made up the out going postage.











 

  • FOOCHOW 'CUSTOMS' REMOVED
POSTCARD SEND FROM FOOCHOW TO U.S.A.

On this postcard, a stroke of the Foochow 'Customs' removed cancel of APL 21, 6 canceled the pair of 2 cents CIP stamps and another stroke to the side. French Foochow forwarding also to the side of the card.

         

  • PEKING 'CUSTOMS' REMOVED
A PHILATELIC POSTCARD CTO IN PEKING

A canceled to order (C.T.O.) card addressed to the French Legation in Peking franked with 9 cents of CIP stamps canceled by four strokes of Peking Dollarchop of 24 MAR 98. On the back of the card is a red Peking 'Customs' removed cancel of MAR 24.
