BI-LINGUAL CANCELLATIONS ON CIP COVERS
The following are examples of BI-LINGUAL cancellations used on CIP stamps.

 

  • CHENGTU BI-LINGUAL
COVER SEND FROM CHENGTU TO U.S.A.

Since agreements had been made to all foreign Post Offices by 1904, no foreign P.O. stamp was required after that time, but foreign P.O. cancel was still applied for the dispatch aboard. The 10 cents CIP stamp was tied by a Chengtu bi-lingual cancel. Two Shanghai transit and Japanese P.O. in Shanghai cancel to the back of the cover.

     

  • HANGCHOW BI-LINGUAL
COVER SEND FROM HANGCHOW TO KIAOCHOW

An Internal rate of 4 cents was charged to send this cover from Hangchow to Kiaochow. Hangchow bi-lingual was used to cancel the stamps. Shanghai transit and Kiaochow bi-lingual receiving to the back of the cover.

  

  • WENCHOW BI-LINGUAL
POSTCARD SEND FROM WENCHOW TO ENGLAND

Since the late 1890's postcard was commonly used in the mail. The National Postal Service set a new foreign postcard rate of 4 cents. Wenchow bi-lingual was used to cancel the 4 cents CIP stamp. Shanghai bi-lingual and French office in Shanghai cancel to the side.

 

  • PAGODA ANCHORAGE BI-LINGUAL
POSTCARD SEND FROM PAGODA ANCH TO AFRICA

This postcard was send from Pagoda Anch, Fukien Province but no foreign P.O. cancel was used for the dispatch. Since the Hong Kong transit CDS was applied, the postcard must have been through the British P.O.

   

  • FOOCHOW BI-LINGUAL
NEWSPAPER WRAPPER SEND FROM FOOCHOW TO U.S.A.

A 2 cents rate was charged to send this newspaper to the USA. The stamp was canceled by a Foochow bi-lingual cancel of 17 JUN 08 and the newspaper was dispatched to the French Post Office for the trip aboard. An example of the French office in Foochow cancel was applied to the wrapper.

 

  • YUNANFU BI-LINGUAL
REGISTERED COVER YUNANFU TO NANNING

This cover was supposed to be send to Nanning via Tonkin and Lungchow as requested by the sender. But instead it was send to Hokow and then to Nanning. The CIP stamps was canceled by Yunanfu bi-lingual cancels of 14 MAR 11. Hokow lunar transit and Nanning Lunar & Bi-lingual arrival cancels was also applied to the cover.

 

  • KIUKIANG BI-LINGUAL
COVER USED FROM KIUKIANG TO SHANGHAI

Very common China Inland Missions cover send from Kiukiang to Shanghai in the early CIP issue period. The pair of 2 cents CIP stamps was canceled by a Kiukiang Bi-lingual cancellation of 24 OCT 99. Shanghai Local Post receiving to the back of the cover.

   

  • CANTON BI-LINGUAL
OFFICIAL COVER FROM CANTON TO SWATOW

This Official Registered cover was send from the Viceroy's office governing the Provinces of Kwangtung & Kwangsi to the German Consulate office in Swatow. The 4 & 10 cents CIP stamps was canceled by Canton Bi-lingual cancels and the 5 cents CIP stamp by a large 'R'. Swatow Bi-lingual receiving and large 'R' applied on the front of the cover.
